What Is the Golden Ratio Face?
The golden ratio, written as φ, is approximately 1.618. In a golden section, the relationship between the whole and the larger part is the same as the relationship between the larger part and the smaller part.
The number became famous through mathematics, art and architecture, then entered theories about facial harmony. This page uses φ as a historical comparison value, not as a definition of beauty.
The Facial Ratios This Test Measures
Each row is a separate photo measurement. The references are historical geometric conventions, not clinical thresholds or population targets.
| Ratio | Formula | Reference | Your measured value | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Face length ÷ face width | hairline → chin ÷ cheek width | φ ≈ 1.618 | — | |
| Facial thirds | three vertical sections ÷ average section | 1 : 1 : 1 | Choose a photo | — |
| Facial fifths | five horizontal sections ÷ average eye width | 1 : 1 : 1 : 1 : 1 | Choose a photo | — |
| Lower lip ÷ upper lip | lower lip height ÷ upper lip height | φ ≈ 1.618 | Choose a photo | — |
| Nose width ÷ mouth width | alar width ÷ mouth width | 0.618 : 1 | Choose a photo | — |
| Interpupillary distance ÷ eye width | iris centre spacing ÷ average eye width | 2.000 : 1 | Choose a photo | — |
| Middle ÷ lower face | brow–nose base ÷ nose base–chin height | 1 : 1 | Choose a photo | — |
Face length and full thirds require your confirmed hairline. They do not enter the index. The model’s forehead point is not a detected hairline.
Facial Thirds and Fifths, Explained
Facial thirds divide the visible face vertically into three sections: hairline to brow area, brow area to the base of the nose, and the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin. The familiar reference is three sections of similar height, but the reference is a drawing convention rather than a requirement every face should satisfy.
The upper third depends on a visible hairline, which is why this calculator asks you to confirm it. Hair, a crop, a high forehead, camera height and head tilt can all move the apparent boundary. If the hairline is uncertain, treat the face-length and thirds readings as unavailable instead of guessing. The face shape detector uses outline ratios to classify shape instead of comparing thirds.
Facial fifths describe the face horizontally using five eye-width sections: the outer face, the eye region, the space between the eyes, the other eye region and the opposite outer face. They help describe spacing around the eyes, but a front-facing photograph cannot provide dependable millimetre measurements without a known scale.
Thirds and fifths are separate from φ: they describe spacing, while the golden ratio compares two lengths through a different mathematical relationship. Read each row as a separate observation, and keep the camera distance, lens, lighting and expression consistent when comparing photos.
What Your Proportion Harmony Index Means
The Proportion Harmony Index is a 0–100 styling reference indicator calculated from this photo. It combines four equally weighted readings: facial fifths, lower-to-upper lip height, nose-to-mouth width and middle-to-lower face height. Higher means closer to the selected reference proportions; it does not mean more attractive.
Full face length and facial thirds are available after you mark the visible hairline, but do not enter the index. Interpupillary distance stays separate because it overlaps with the eye-spacing information already included in fifths. No score is issued when a core measurement is unavailable.
Use the breakdown to explore proportions when experimenting with hair, frames, makeup or portrait framing. The number cannot select a style for you or measure personality, health or skin quality.
For fifths, average the five segment matches. The squared proximity gently penalises larger departures so a single near-reference feature cannot dominate the result; a ratio of 1.20 against 1.00 gives 69.4 points. The index is the mean of four unrounded component matches, displayed to one decimal. All four components must be measurable; missing values never silently change the weights.
Version: proportion-harmony-v3. The squared penalty, references and equal weights are explicit product choices for this reference index. No population calibration or accuracy claim is made.
What the Research Actually Says
The relationship between φ and facial beauty is disputed. A 2024 article by Farhad B. Naini concluded that there is no convincing evidence linking the golden ratio to idealized human proportions or facial beauty, and no evidence for using it in facial aesthetic or orthognathic planning.
A 2024 systematic assessment by Londono and colleagues also does not support treating one golden ratio as a universal facial rule. Controlled studies provide stronger support for associations involving bilateral symmetry, averageness and visible skin quality than for a universal φ rule; this is an evidence comparison, not a common effect-size ranking. Those findings still do not turn appearance into one formula.
Golden Ratio vs Symmetry
Symmetry and proportion are different concepts. Symmetry asks whether the left and right sides resemble each other around a central axis. Proportion asks how the sizes and distances of different features relate to one another.
A face can be relatively symmetrical without matching φ, and can contain a proportion close to a historical reference while having visible left-right differences. Try the Face Symmetry Test.
How to Take a Photo That Measures Well
Face the camera directly, keep the camera at eye level, stand at least an arm’s length away and avoid a wide-angle close-up selfie. A longer distance followed by a crop gives a more useful comparison than holding the phone close to your face.
Keep your expression relaxed, close your lips gently and move hair away from the hairline, eyes and jaw. Use even front lighting, leave space around the whole face and repeat the same setup when comparing readings. A changed pose or shadow can move a landmark without changing your proportions.
What Can and Can't Change About Facial Proportions
Bone structure is not changed by a browser measurement, and a single photo cannot tell you which tissue creates a visible proportion. It can describe the image you supplied, not diagnose anatomy or predict how a face looks in motion.
Visible appearance can change with body composition, posture, expression, facial hair, hairstyle, lighting, lens distance and framing. Those changes may alter a portrait without changing the underlying structure, so use this page to compare controlled photos rather than chase a higher number. The jawline rating tool focuses on visible lower-face width, angles and contour.
This page is for measurement and observation; it does not recommend cosmetic procedures or medical treatment. If a new change comes with pain, altered movement, chewing difficulty or another functional concern, seek an appropriately qualified professional.
FAQ
What is the golden ratio in facial aesthetics?
It is a historical reference based on φ, approximately 1.618. It is not a universal definition of facial beauty.
Does matching the golden ratio make a face attractive?
No single ratio determines facial attractiveness. Research on φ and facial beauty is disputed.
What does this calculator measure?
It measures face length and width, facial thirds, facial fifths, lip proportions, nose-to-mouth width and interpupillary distance relative to eye width when landmarks are usable.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The free analysis runs in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device and is never uploaded.
Why do I need to confirm my hairline?
A real hairline may be covered by hair or lighting. Marking it enables optional face-length and thirds readings. Those readings never change the four-part index.
Can I use a selfie?
You can, but a close wide-angle selfie can change visible distances. Use an arm’s-length or more distant photo with the camera at eye level.
What do facial thirds mean?
Facial thirds divide the visible face vertically into three sections: hairline to brow area, brow area to nose base and nose base to chin.
Are facial fifths the same as the golden ratio?
No. Fifths are a horizontal spacing convention based on eye width and are separate from φ.
How is my Proportion Harmony Index calculated?
Each component receives 100 × [the smaller of measured/reference and reference/measured]². For example, a ratio of 1.20 against 1.00 receives 69.4 points because (1 ÷ 1.20)² × 100 = 69.4. The index averages four equally weighted component matches: fifths, lips, nose/mouth width and middle/lower face height. It is a reference index, not an attractiveness judgment, accuracy percentage or population rank.
Can facial proportions change?
Visible appearance can change with posture, expression, body composition, facial hair, hairstyle, lighting and camera distance. This tool does not diagnose bone structure.
